Cristin Milioti is one of my fave actresses of late, I try to watch anything she's in. She always seems to be in these quirky, sort of unconventional roles. Palm Springs, Made for Love and The Resort pop into my mind. I first became aware of her in the cast soundtrack of David Bowie's Lazarus, she sings lead for Changes and Always Crashing in the Same Car. She seems like she's just a theater kid who found her way into some great successes. Last year I found out that she did a gorgeous cover of Bon Iver's 715 Creeks and...
Malibu
blog life without algorithms malibu music
I've been listening to Malibu quite a bit lately. I came across her music randomly when she put out her One Life EP in 2019 and immediately fell for it. She has a new EP, Palaces of Pity, both linked below. I listen usually when I'm reading before sleep. I love the way the music drifts and moves kinda like the sea, very calming. Very recommended. 25 Years Ago
Weirdly, I was just thinking about this gig the other night. I looked up the ticket and it's 25 years ago on this day (of this writing). Honestly, at the time, I had no idea who Tindersticks were and I can't say I ever became a big fan after seeing them at this show. Of course, I know who they are now and I know they're revered by some peeps. I remember they were really good live. I actually saw them a second time after this show. But yeah, I've never been more than a very casual Tindersticks listener. I...
Look Both Ways
So yesterday I was nearly hit by a car. I was walking by the lake and I needed to cross the street, there are 4 lanes, 2 in each direction. I waited at the crosswalk. A Bronco type car in the lane closest to me was coming up and it stopped for me. There was nobody else coming so I waved and started across the first lane. I step into the second lane, I glanced to my left and I see this white BMW coming, I heard the engine rev as he sped up. Easily like 40mph, maybe 50. It's...
LWA Origin Story
blog life without algorithms origin story
Like a lot of people, I'd been suffering from social media fatigue lately. I've been extremely online ever since I can remember. I didn't grow up with it, I'm Gen X, but I was interested when a friend told me about his college message board in the late 80s. It sounded fascinating to me and I jumped in as soon as I could. Last year, I was trying to unplug from some online stuff. I knew I could never fully disengage but I could definitely cut back. I've been camping a few times the past year or so and I'm...
