2023: Kenough is Kenough

blog life without algorithms mixtapes music

It's been a minute since I posted here, mainly because...2023 was, well, it's been something. I went back and forth a couple times on whether I wanted to do this or not. The old habit won out in the end and here we are. As usual, the download version is the one I prefer because, well, reasons. But here's a Spotify link if that's your thing, no judgement. The download version has a couple tracks and a couple nifty things that aren't available from the corporate machine.

Details details details. This is just stuff I like and what I was able to get to. There's a ton to keep up with and I have no doubt there is so much more fantastic music I've missed. I made this with Audacity, as I've been doing for a long while. It takes a bit of time, but it's kinda therapeutic for me, just trying to find the flow and transitions. This thing is about 4.5 hours long, 71 tracks and the file is 626mb.

I have a few fave songs that I kept going back to for a good chunk of the year. PONY's Sick, from their album Velveteen. A refreshing buzzsaw blast of 90s alt that doesn't sound so out of place in 2023.

Carly Rae Jepsen's Psychedelic Switch, from her album The Loveliest Time. She pretty much made a Daft Punk song and it's glorious. I would happily listen to a 12-hour mix of this song. Imagine if the Daft Punk dudes got back together to produce CRJ's next album. Or even one of them. I'd be super into it.

Hailey Whitters' I'm in Love, from her EP of the same name. I imagine that this song is the sound of being sing-out-loud happy and, you know, in love. Just a delirious two-and-a-half minute swirl of pop, country and joy.

Also, this includes two versions of the same song, Samia's Honey. She did this thing again where she gets other artists to cover her songs as part of a "reimagined" series (she did it with her first album a few years ago, 2020's excellent The Baby). In this case, it's Maya Hawke covering Honey, and I just like both versions so much. No apologies.

Not available on the Spotify machine is Alvvays' cool cover of Jane Wiedlin's Rush Hour. Kind of unexpected, you rarely hear anyone covering The Go-Go's or anything related to them. It's a great song and Alvvays nails it.

Lastly, the versions of the opening track, Olivia Rodrigo's Vampire, are different. The live piano version (which I prefer) is on the mp3, it's not available on Spotify for whatever reasons. Spotify has only the original release, last time I checked.

Again, those links: 1) Spotify, 2) Download and 3) an embedded playlist below. If you enjoy it on any level at all (or even if you don't), feel free to drop a line here or elsewhere.

Thanks for keeping it up. It is always a pleasure to check your recommendation out. There is always something great I haven’t heard of.
