Record of the Week: The Gits - Frenching the Bully

Welcome back to Record of the Week, whomever reads this. Summer is in full swing now. Luckily the bay area remains naturally air-conditioned. It's been a little warm but nothing like what other cities are going through at the moment. On to the record selected by the Randomizer this week, it's The Gits' 1992 release, Frenching the Bully. I'll be spinning the 2025 Sub Pop reissue (on cool red vinyl!).

A couple years ago, I wasn't too familiar with this band. I'd heard the name but never investigated. I remember Kurt Cobain wearing one of their shirts and briefly mentioning them, but I just never looked them up. In late 2024, I read that Gits reissues were coming so I decided I'd finally check them out. At first listen, I pretty much loved everything I heard and now I'm kicking myself for having missed out for so long.

As I listened, I read about them and the tragic story of their singer, Mia Zapata. It's so fucked up, you can read it for yourself; I'm not gonna get into it here. Mia tears it up, what a great voice and presence. And the band is so good. These guys should have been huge. Their second album was released in 1994 (Enter: The Conquering Chicken), I bought this one as well. These albums fucking destroy. The recent reissues make them easier to find, they're very worth tracking down.
