Record of the Week: Ivy - Realistic

So, I was trying to think of the subject for this week's ROTW and was coming up empty. It's been a bit of a whirlwind this week, and I didn't really give it much thought until last night. Decided to use Discog's randomizer to see what it would give me. Basically, if you have your collection listed on Discogs, it'll pick a random title from your collection for you. It landed on Realistic, Ivy's 1995 debut album. I remember hearing Get Enough on the radio in 1995 and it took me a little bit to track down the song, but eventually...
Record of the Week: Kate Bush - Hounds of Love

Seeing as how Hounds of Love had its 40th anniversary this week (16 Sept 1985), I thought I'd put this one on. I found her just randomly flipping channels at a friend's house. The Babooshka video was playing and I saw this woman in chainmail, just shrieking and letting it all fly. Captivating, to say the least. I somehow managed to find out her name, went down to my Tower Records and looked through her catalog. Saw that she had a new album coming, so I came back a week or two later and picked up Hounds of Love. Poppy,...
Record of the Week: Lambrini Girls - Who Let the Dogs Out

Who Let the Dogs Out is very feminist, queer, angry, funny, super catchy and punk as fuck. I don't know if I'm the target demo ( the hype sticker says "party music for gay angry sluts") but I love this album (I picked up this cool blue vinyl copy from my local earlier this summer). I think if you're human and angry about current events bullshit, you're more than halfway there. Great album. Put it in your ears, listen to the lyrics, feel the burn and get fucking pissed.
Record of the Week: Natalie Bergman - My Home is Not in This World

Gonna try this Record of the Week thing, see how it goes. This Natalie Bergman album, My Home is Not in This World, dropped a couple months ago. It's a bit of a grower, I didn't click with it right away. I turned the corner one day when I was commuting to work and it came on randomly. I have a playlist of new stuff I'm interested in checking out, and I had been listening to the albums preceding this one on the list and was too preoccupied to change it. That's what I mean when I say randomly. So, yeah,...
September Mix: Bullet Time
blog life without algorithms mixtapes music
Inspired by my girl group listening a few posts back, I thought I'd make a mix of my faves. Then I decided to throw in some Motown and Stax stuff. Even stretched a bit to some Doo Wop and some 70s soul. Maybe even a little disco. This is what I got. 150 songs and 6.5 hours of pure goodness. At the start, I tried to arrange the order of the tracks, but it was too much. If you're gonna listen to it, best to use shuffle/random play and just turn that shit up.
