Record of the Week: Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - Soul of a Woman

blog life without algorithms music record of the week records sharon jones & the dap-kings vinyl

I first learned of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings in 2007 when 100 Days, 100 Nights was released. Instantly hooked, I went to the internet to see if they were touring. Turned out the answer was yes, they were coming to my town (and on my birthday of all days), but it was sold out. I kept at it and eventually scored a ticket. I went alone on my birthday and it was completely worth it. I totally kept up would see them a couple more times.

This week, the Discogs randomizer gives us Soul of a Woman, the final Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings album, which continues (and finalizes) their excellent run. Sharon Jones was such a great front woman; pure energy, talent and fun. And the Dap-Kings are an incredibly tight and versatile band. Those guys can stop and start on a dime. Put them all together and you get a dazzling display of showmanship and musicianship. Honestly, I'd say that this band is best experienced in a live setting, but the records are the next best thing since those days are sadly over. This is just such a breezy, Sunday afternoon album. Kinda bittersweet too, but a great listen for this weekly exercise. Give it a spin if you can.
