This last weekend of October, the Randomizer (I feel like this word should be capitalized) gives us Inventions' Continuous Portrait, which was released in 2020. This band, Inventions, is a collaboration between a couple people; Eluvium's Matthew Cooper and Explosions in the Sky's Mark T. Smith. They are (were?) label-mates (Temporary Residence Limited) and I think Eluvium and EITS toured together early on. Continuous Portrait is their third album.
I feel the Eluvium vibes in the record, they are easier to pick up since that's just one person. EITS is essentially a rock band of which Smith is 25% of, and I feel like this would be a completely different thing for him, like not having to worry about playing it live (Inventions hasn't toured as far as I know). Maybe it's something for creative friends to try and do.
This is a very chill, instrumental collage. Uplifting at points. There are incidental vocals (mostly spoken) a la early Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Not sure where the vocals are cut from, but they kinda add to the mysterious, haunting feel of the music. Honestly, I haven't listened to this in a long while, but that's the point of this little exercise, isn't it. This is a cool record, perfect for a lazy Sunday, let me know if you listen to it. I'm going to work it into a regular rotation, or maybe a playlist of sorts. I have the other albums and EP.
