Record of the Week: Dead Feathers - All is Lost

blog dead feathers life without algorithms music record of the week records vinyl

Welcome back to ROTW. We may have taken last week off, but we're still here. This week, the Randomizer is giving us Dead Feathers' 2019 debut album, All is Lost. This is the copy that you can see on the turntable.

First off, I need to get this into rotation more, it's a really fucking good album. It's got kind of a 60s psych rock stoner blues vibe, which I have to say is not my preferred genre(s). But sometimes good music just transcends all those labels, and who needs all that shit anyways. If it moves you, then who cares? Back to this album, though. As mentioned, really fucking good, but the MVP is Marissa Allen's voice. Simply remarkable, her vocals absolutely destroy. What a powerhouse. And the band as a whole is super strong. There's a dreamy/hazy aspect to these songs, and the band seems content to dwell in that. They definitely pick up the pace, but they also let things unfold. Sitting here listening to this, I can close my eyes and feel transported to a different time, maybe even a different place.

This album was a pandemic lockdown find. Has it already been six years since that madness began? And look at us now. Anyways, I bought a lot of records during that time, this being one of them, and I'm so glad the Randomizer picked this one today. For whatever reason, I didn't keep up with Dead Feathers after this album, but I'm seeing that they put another one out in 2023 (Full Circle) that I'm definitely going to look up. I think I might like to see them live, too, if it's possible. It looks like they're still out there doing it, so that's a good sign already. So if you're unfamiliar, get this into your rotation, let it simmer, and sit with it.
